Staten Island Stump Grinding

Stump Grinding in Staten Island

That tree’s gone, but the stump is still sitting there – right in the middle of your yard, right where you want to put a patio, or right where someone’s going to twist an ankle during the next backyard barbecue.

Stumps don’t go away on their own. They rot slowly, attract insects, and make mowing a headache. Stump grinding takes care of the problem in a couple of hours and gives you your yard back.

What We Actually Do

We bring in a stump grinder – a machine with a spinning carbide-tipped wheel that chews the stump down to wood chips. We grind below the soil surface (typically 4-6 inches down, deeper if you need it for replanting) so you’re left with a flat area you can fill, seed, or build on.

The wood chips left behind? You can use them as mulch, we can haul them away, or we can fill the hole and leave things tidy. Your call.

The whole process is faster and less invasive than digging out a stump, which would mean tearing up a much larger section of your lawn to get at the roots.

When Stump Grinding Makes Sense

You want to reclaim the space. Maybe you’re planning a garden bed, a shed, a pool, or just a flat lawn where kids can run around without watching their feet.

It’s a tripping hazard. Stumps near walkways, driveways, or play areas are accidents waiting to happen – especially once grass starts growing around them and they become harder to see.

You’re selling the house. Nothing says “deferred maintenance” like old stumps scattered around a property. Grinding them is a small investment that makes the yard look finished.

Pests are moving in. Rotting stumps attract termites, carpenter ants, and beetles. If the stump is close to your house, that’s not the company you want.

You’re just tired of mowing around it. Honestly, this is reason enough.

Stump Grinding vs. Complete Stump Removal

Stump grinding handles the visible problem – the part above and just below the surface. The roots stay in the ground but will decay naturally over time.

Complete stump removal means excavating the entire root ball, which requires heavier equipment, more labor, and leaves you with a much bigger hole to fill. It costs more and tears up more of your yard.

For most residential situations, grinding is the practical choice. If you have a specific reason to remove the entire root system – like roots that are damaging a foundation or you’re doing major construction – we can talk through that option too.

What About the Roots?

The roots left behind after grinding will break down over the next several years. They won’t send up new shoots (the tree is dead), and they won’t keep growing.

If you have roots that are already causing problems—lifting sidewalks, cracking driveways, getting into pipes – that’s a separate service called root cutting. We handle that too. Just let us know what you’re dealing with and we’ll figure out the right approach.

Cost Factors

Every stump is different. What affects the price:

  • Size – A 12-inch stump is a quicker job than a 36-inch oak.
  • Location – Stumps near fences, foundations, or utilities take more care.
  • Number of stumps – Doing several at once is more efficient, so the per-stump cost goes down.
  • Root flare – Some trees have wide surface roots that add to the grinding area.
  • Access – If we can’t get equipment close, it takes longer.

We give free estimates, so you’ll know the price before we start. No surprises.

The G&R Difference

We’re not a franchise. Glen Gabel, the owner, is on site for every job—not sitting in an office somewhere while a random crew shows up at your house.

We’ve been doing this on Staten Island for over 15 years. We’re fully insured, we show up when we say we will, and we clean up when we’re done. That last part matters more than people realize until they’ve hired a company that doesn’t do it.

We’re the most-reviewed tree service on Google Maps in Staten Island. Read what people say – the consistent themes are that we’re fast, we’re fair on price, and we leave properties looking better than we found them.

Other things worth knowing:

  • Free estimates, always
  • Military and senior discounts, every day
  • 24/7 availability for emergencies
  • Lowest price guarantee
